Disability Arts Online

Description:As part of our Diverse Perspectives programme DAO is looking to commission a South East-based digital artist to collaborate with one or two Outside In artists to make a series of short, moving image, digital works to be showcased on the Outside In and Disability Arts Online websites.

We are looking for an artistic response to the work of one or two artists who have submitted galleries to the Outside In website. The work produced could be film, animation, audio or a combination of moving image work, that is aesthetically exciting.

Outside In aims to provide a platform for artists who find it difficult to access the art world either because of mental health issues, disability, health, social circumstance or because their work does not conform to what is normally considered as art. You can find out more about this groundbreaking initiative produced by Pallant House Gallery in Chichester at www.outsidein.org.uk

Our aim is that the resulting piece(s) of digital artwork will encourage people to make art, by providing an exciting response to the Outside In artists technique or creative process.

These works will be shared on both DAO and the Outside In websites in order to give a deeper insight into the artists’ working practices.

The deadline for producing the final artwork would be 1 October 2012, in preparation for showcasing as part of the launch of Outside In at Pallant House Gallery on 27 October 2012.

We are also in negotiation to fund the costs of the touring of the digital artworks as part of the 2013 Outside In exhibitions starting in March 2013 and completing in April 2014.

We are looking for proposals from artists who identify with having an impairment or who consider themselves disabled, who would be keen to liaise with Outside In artists who are interested in having a unique aspect of their artistic process captured for posterity.

DAO will support the digital artist awarded this commission to make contact with the Outside In artist(s) to support the collaboration.

Proposals must include details of:
The style of presentation of the work (eg how it will display)
Accessibility (all video must be subtitled)
Details of previous work
A rough breakdown of costs involved in making the work, including artists

In addition to the fee of £1500 there is a limited amount of additional funds available for access and travel to be negotiated during the commissioning process.

DAO is going through an exciting period of development with the recent award of a significant Arts Council, Grants for the Arts Award to respond to the Cultural Olympiad. Trustees will support the implementation of DAO’s Diverse Perspectives project, commissioning artists and writers to produce work for the journal.

We are particularly looking for motivated individuals with a commitment to disability, diversity and creativity and with expertise in finance, marketing, fundraising and online journalism.

OCA har gleden av å annonsere utgivelsen av dOCUMENTA(13)s notatbok nr. 67, Hannah Ryggen, skrevet av OCAs direktør Marta Kuzma. Notatboken inngår i en serie av hundre notatbøker med tittelen 100 Notes – 100 Thoughts, og er dedikert til en av Norges mest kjente billedvevkunstnere, svensk-norske Hannah Ryggen, og hennes produksjon. Boken, samt flere av kunstnerens billedvever, utgjør Hannah Ryggens deltagelse i den forestående dOCUMENTA(13) i Kassel, som åpner 6. Juni 2012.

I følge forfatteren “vevde Ryggen sine tepper ut fra et sosialt engasjement og ofte med politiske temaer. Hun markerte dermed et skifte i tilnærmingen til billedvev, fra å være en konvensjonspreget og apolitisk anvendt kunstform til et autentisk og umiddelbart uttrykk for det sosio-politiske landskapet i Ryggens samtid’.

Hannah Ryggen ble født i Malmø, Sverige, i 1894, men bodde det meste av sitt liv på et småbruk på Ørlandet i Norge. Hun var gift med den norske maleren Hans Ryggen. Hannah Ryggen var utdannet lærer, og studerte senere maleri under den danske billedkunstneren Fredrik Krebs. Som selvlært vever hadde hun en separatutstilling på Moderna Museet i Stockholm i 1962 og utstilte ved Venezia-biennalen i 1964. Ryggen døde i Trondheim i 1970.

OCA har gleden av å annonsere et retrospektiv med filmskaperen Peter Watkins fra 7. til 14. mai, som organiseres i forbindelse med Watkins deltakelse i OCAs internasjonale studioprogram. Arrangementet vil løfte frem Watkins grunnleggende historiske bidrag til film som kritisk praksis og vil ha spesielt fokus på hans forhold til Norge gjennom Edvard Munch, og filmen med samme navn fra 1973. I anledning neste års 150-årsjubileum for Munchs fødsel, ønsker OCA å sette et nytt søkelys på Watkins’ liv og verker. Watkins skal bo i Munch-residensen på Ekely, og holde møter og workshops for studenter med bakgrunn fra film, billedkunst og andre relaterte fagområder.

‘Peter Watkins: Et retrospektiv’ inkluderer et utvalg av Watkins viktigste filmer, samt en åpen paneldiskusjon hvor hans tidligere samarbeidspartnere vil delta. Det innledes med visningen av filmen Edvard Munch, etterfulgt av en paneldebatt hvor filmens betydning både ved lanseringen i 1973 og i dag, vil bli diskutert. Edvard Munch dramatiserer tre tiår i kunstnerens liv og er av Watkins selv betraktet som den mest personlige filmen han noen gang har produsert. Filmen gir ett hudløst og uforglemmelig portrett av hvordan Munchs kreative utvikling var tett knyttet til tidsånden og de sosiale relasjonene i hans samtid.

Denne etterfølges av visninger av Watkins´andre skandinaviske prosjekter, blant annet The Gladiators (1968) og Evening Land (1976). The Freethinker (1992-94), hans biografi om August Strindberg som fletter sammen fire forskjellige tidslinjer vil bli vist på 100-årsdagen for kunstneren og forfatterens død i 1912. I tillegg vises The War Game (1965), Punishment Park (1970) og La Commune (de Paris, 1871) (1999) – alle filmer som gjennom dramatiseringen av historiske eller samtidige hendelser er uttrykk for en politisk og kritisk refleksjon over filmspråk, distribusjonsnettverk og media generelt.

Om Peter Watkins
Peter Watkins (født 1935 i Norbiton, Surrey, UK) er en filmskaper og TV-regissør. Han regnes som en av pionerene innen dramadokumentaren, og har vært aktiv siden 50-tallet med flere banebrytende filmer, som The War Game (1965), Punishment Park (1970), Edvard Munch (1973), The Freethinker (1992–94) og La Commune (de Paris, 1871) (1999). Filmer som alle utforsker politiske konjunkturer i samtiden, enten de er satt til nåtiden eller historisk tid, og som retter et kritisk blikk mot dokumentarfilmens begrensinger og muligheter. Sentralt i Watkins virke er det kritiske søkelyset på massemedia og det han kaller ‘mediakrisen’ og ‘monoformen’, beskrevet i boken Media Crisis (2004).

OCA is pleased to announce the awarding of the publication Whatever Happened to Sex in Scandinavia? within the competition ‘Årets vakreste Bøker’ (‘The Most Beautiful Books of The Year’), organised annually by Grafill ­– the organisation for Norwegian graphic designers and illustrators. Whatever Happened to Sex in Scandinavia?, designed by NODE Berlin Oslo, received the first prize in the category ‘Facts and Reference / Adult Literature’. According to the jury, the design of Whatever Happened to Sex in Scandinavia? has to be praised for ‘a documentation of an epoch, a theme and a movement with a humorous and unpretentious undertone’. They further add: ‘The choice of a soft cover is untraditional for a reference book that shall be used often and stay in the bookshelf for many years. This makes the book as an even more exiting object. The designer is familiar with the material and has acquired a good balance between pure documentation and essays and photographic references’. In a comment NODE says that ‘there is a lot of work behind the project – both from us, but mostly from OCA’s side. Whatever Happened to Sex in Scandinavia? is a very interesting project with a rich material source. We hope that the book will get the attention it deserves’.

The awarded books will be on view on the 2nd floor of the National Library in Oslo until 12 April. The exhibition will then travel to Grafill’s offices in Rosenkrantz gate 21, Oslo, and will be on display until 27 April 2012.

Whatever Happened to Sex in Scandinavia? is an anthology edited by OCA’s Marta Kuzma and Pablo Lafuente that reflects upon the juncture of the political and the erotic in the 1960s and 70s, in special relation to the image of Scandinavia as a sexually and politically utopic territory during those decades. With a close reading of the cultural and socio-political history of Scandinavia, through the writings of Wilhelm Reich, Herbert Marcuse, Norman O. Brown, Daniel Guérin, Jacqueline Rose and others, and through an examination of the obscenity bonanza that emerged around Swedish film-maker Vilgot Sjöman‘s I Am Curious (Yellow), the publication offers a plethora of historical material and an investigation of the political motivations behind naming a cultural form obscene and pornographic.

The anthology is published by the Office for Contemporary Art Norway and Koenig Books, London, with generous support from Fritt Ord. It can be purchased through OCA’s website and in bookstores internationally.

OCA’s Public Space
From 29 March until 23 June OCA presents PORTRAIT PORTRAIT OF OF A A GENERATION GENERATION by artist and author Matias Faldbakken, curated by Marta Kuzma. In sourcing iconic sculptures produced in the 20th century, the artist essentially de-skills modernist aspirations toward the aerodynamic, the minimal, and the abstract by acrobating revered works of ‘art’ into vessels for intoxication.
